I do not want to print receipts unnecessarily. I have turned “do not print automatically” to off but still, the debit cards keep on printing

Probably this happens, because you use a payment system terminal. And it has own settings, that do not depend on printer settings in POS.

If you use payment system, probably you need turn off automatically printing receipts on payment system terminal settings.
