Tradition Meets Technology: How a Wellness Store in Kuching Uses Loyverse
We spoke with Chuan Chin, who runs a wellness store in Kuching, Malaysia. Open for about a year, the business combines traditional Chinese medicine-inspired services with modern wellness technology. Drawing on a background in software engineering, Chuan Chin also uses Loyverse POS, Employee Management, Unlimited Sales History, and the Loyverse API to streamline daily operations and make informed business decisions.
Could you briefly introduce your business and explain what motivated you to start it?
Our business is a wellness store in Kuching, Malaysia, built around three main services. We offer an AI-powered pulse assessment that gives customers a general indication of what may be happening inside their bodies. We also provide foot baths based on traditional Chinese medicine principles and a chamber-based form of moxibustion.
This is different from standard moxibustion. The chamber is roughly the size of a single bed. The customer lies inside for about 30 minutes, with their head outside, while mugwort burns in the chamber. It also incorporates far-infrared and graphene technologies. Customers can simply rest and may even fall asleep during the session.
We were inspired to start the business after seeing the experience of one of our family members, who had psoriasis. He had consulted Western doctors and tried different medicines, herbs, and other approaches, but nothing seemed to help. After using the moxibustion chamber regularly for a few months, his psoriasis cleared completely. Before that, he used to wear long-sleeved shirts to cover his skin, even though Malaysia has a hot climate. Afterwards, he felt comfortable wearing short sleeves again.
We also saw other people have positive experiences after trying many options that had not worked for them. Because we have family in Kuching, we decided to open a wellness store here and make the service available locally. That is how the business began.
What makes your wellness business different from others?
In addition to the technology behind our services, I bring a software engineering background to the business. Many businesses in Kuching are still in the process of adopting digital tools, so we saw an opportunity to make our operation as efficient as possible.
We want our staff to handle customer information carefully, especially because it can be sensitive, so we keep it organized in our systems. We recently purchased an iPad specifically for Loyverse and use the Loyverse API behind the scenes. It allows us to analyze customer and sales data, such as how many people choose a foot bath and how demand changes with the seasons or around holidays. This helps us anticipate demand, improve our decisions, and identify areas where the business could perform better.
How did you discover Loyverse, and why did you choose it?
Because I come from a software engineering background, my first thought was that I could build a POS system myself. I soon realized how much work that would involve and how many details I would have to consider.
I decided to research the systems already available. As a new business, I needed something that could do everything we required without being too expensive, while still giving me room to build additional tools around it. I compared several options through online research, including Google and AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, and decided to try Loyverse.
Once we tested it, I felt it was very good and included everything we needed. At first, we even adapted the POS into a simple check-in and check-out process for our customers at no extra cost, although that is not its primary purpose.
Later, we subscribed to Unlimited Sales History and Employee Management. Unlimited Sales History is particularly helpful when I need to review past activity, while Employee Management gives us a clock-in and clock-out system. The API is also valuable because it lets us work with information such as daily profit and other operating data.
How easy was it to start using Unlimited Sales History and Employee Management?
I found both features quite easy to use. Tutorials are available, but I did not really need them because the system is intuitive. It does what it says it will do, and it is easy to understand what you are signing up for. There are a few reporting functions I would like to refine, but overall, the experience has been straightforward and helpful.
How many employees do you currently manage with Loyverse?
We currently manage four employees in the system. They share the same POS device, but we still need separate access levels for the manager and staff so that each role has the appropriate permissions.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Do not assume you need to build everything yourself. I have the expertise to develop software, but I kept wanting to create my own tools instead of using an existing product that had already been refined and used by many people.
When you start a business, you already have many things to manage, so ask for help and use the available tools. Many products let you try them for free before making a commitment. Do not let your ego convince you that you have to do everything yourself.
